Monumento às Bandeiras
1953
This monumental granite sculpture depicts a dynamic procession of human figures emerging from and ascending over a rearing horse, carved in warm beige stone. Created by Brazilian modernist sculptor Victor Brecheret, the work occupies a commanding presence in São Paulo's Ibirapuera Park, its massive scale and dramatic composition visible across the plaza. The figures, rendered in high relief, appear to surge forward with collective energy, their forms flowing seamlessly from the muscular body of the horse beneath them. Executed in the mid twentieth century, this iconic piece celebrates movement, human aspiration, and national identity through abstracted yet deeply expressive forms. The work remains one of Brazil's most recognizable public sculptures, embodying modernist principles of monumental public art. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)
