Two works
1939
This archival ensemble comprises two gelatin silver prints documenting formal social occasions from the mid twentieth century. The left photograph captures four elegantly dressed figures in evening wear at what appears to be a formal gathering, rendered in rich tonal blacks characteristic of period photography. The right image, mounted on aged cream colored paper and dated Stockholm, October 1944, shows three men in casual dress engaged in conversation. Together these works exemplify documentary photography's role in capturing both formal ceremonial moments and informal social interaction, presenting a material record of 1940s social life through the direct indexical nature of the photographic medium.
