Appropriation print (with Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein); and Warhol Cow Wallpaper
Richard Pettibone's characteristically diminutive works playfully engage with the icons of the contemporary art world, here appropriating the signatures of Pop and Minimalist luminaries Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, and Roy Lichtenstein alongside a miniaturized recreation of Warhol's iconic Cow Wallpaper. Pettibone's practice of meticulously reproducing and recontextualizing the works of his celebrated contemporaries raises provocative questions about authorship, originality, and the cult of artistic celebrity. Signed and dated 1970 and 1971 respectively, these works exemplify Pettibone's role as a pioneering figure in the Appropriation Art movement that would gain widespread recognition in the following decade.
