Marcel Duchamp, "Belle Haleine: Eau de Voilette", 1921 (violet)
1966
A meticulous miniature reproduction of Marcel Duchamp's iconic readymade perfume bottle artwork, rendered in violet tones using acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas. Pettibone faithfully replicates Duchamp's playful subversion of commercial packaging and gender identity, in which Duchamp posed as his female alter ego Rrose Sélavy. Housed in the artist's own frame, the work reflects Pettibone's signature practice of appropriating canonical avant-garde works at a dramatically reduced scale.
