Caryatids of the Erechtheion
-406
The Erechtheion's iconic south porch features six full-length marble figures serving as structural columns, a distinctive architectural solution known as caryatids. Carved in the Classical Greek style around 406 BCE, these draped female forms display extraordinary naturalism in their flowing garments and serene, idealized faces. Each figure stands approximately 7.5 feet tall and bears the weight of the entablature above with graceful dignity, their poses subtly varied to suggest movement and individuality. The caryatids represent a masterwork of integration between sculpture and architecture, transforming utilitarian support into refined artistic expression. These sculptures exemplify the height of ancient Greek sculptural achievement and remain among the most celebrated works of the Classical period. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)
