Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno)
1566
This monumental bronze fountain, created by the Mannerist sculptor Giambologna in 1566, dominates Piazza del Nettuno in Bologna with its commanding presence and dynamic composition. The central figure of Neptune stands triumphantly atop a marble pedestal, one arm raised in a commanding gesture while holding his trident, surrounded by four bronze cherubs or putti seated at the base with water cascading from their positions. The work exemplifies Renaissance mastery of human anatomy and movement, with the god's muscular form captured in a contrapposto stance that conveys both power and elegance. Combining bronze sculpture with an integrated water feature, the fountain serves as both a functional civic amenity and a celebrated symbol of Bologna's artistic heritage and civic pride.
