Prisma I (Butin, Gronert and Olbricht 120)
Gerhard Richter's "Prisma I" is a conceptual multiple from 2002 consisting of a transparent heavy flint glass prism housed in a carefully designed cardboard presentation case with grey cloth lining. Created as part of an edition of 80 for the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, the work exemplifies Richter's interest in optical phenomena and the materiality of perception, reducing artistic expression to its most fundamental geometric and transparent form. The modest dimensions and serial production method challenge conventional notions of the unique art object while inviting viewers to engage with light and refraction as primary artistic concerns.
