Kerze II (Candle II)
In this striking work, Richter layers densely applied black oil paint, dragged across the surface with a squeegee, over a vivid color offset print of a burning candle. The tension between the photographic precision of the printed image beneath and the gestural, smeared paint above creates a haunting interplay of representation and abstraction. The glossy nitro varnish coating the surface lends the work a luminous, almost cinematic quality, amplifying the flickering drama of the partially obscured flame.
