Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin
1968
This monumental bronze sculpture depicts Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a revered Korean naval commander, standing in a commanding pose with hand on hip and holding an ornate sword. Cast in dark bronze by sculptor Kim Se-jung, the figure wears elaborate traditional Korean military armor adorned with detailed relief work, a flowing cape, and a distinctive tall helmet crowned with a trident-like ornament. The work exemplifies mid-twentieth-century Korean commemorative sculpture, celebrating national heroism and maritime legacy through heroic realism and meticulous craftsmanship. Installed prominently in Gwanghwamun Plaza, one of Seoul's most significant public spaces, the statue has become an iconic symbol of Korean pride and naval tradition. Photo by Artan on Unsplash
