The Bronze Horseman (Peter the Great)
1782
This monumental bronze equestrian sculpture depicts Peter the Great astride a rearing horse, captured in dynamic forward motion against the vast sky of Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. Created by French Baroque sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet and completed in 1782, the work exemplifies the heroic monument tradition while introducing a revolutionary sense of movement and psychological intensity. The figure sits atop an enormous granite pedestal inscribed with the dedication in Latin, PETRO PRIMO CATHARINA SECUNDA, commemorating the city's founder and his successor. The horse's energetic pose, with front hooves lifted high, contrasts with the rider's commanding yet contemplative bearing, creating a sculpture that functions simultaneously as triumphant celebration and introspective portrait. Known as the Bronze Horseman, this work has become an iconic symbol of St. Petersburg and remains one of the most celebrated public sculptures in European art history.
