Cybele Fountain (Fuente de Cibeles)
1782
The Cybele Fountain, designed by Ventura Rodríguez and sculpted by Francisco Gutiérrez, stands as an iconic centerpiece of Madrid's Plaza de Cibeles. This monumental marble and stone composition depicts the Roman goddess Cybele seated majestically atop a chariot drawn by lions, attended by cherubic figures in classical baroque style. The goddess gazes serenely into the distance while holding symbols of abundance and power, her flowing drapery rendered with remarkable sculptural detail. Originally completed in the late 18th century as part of Madrid's urban embellishment, the fountain has become one of Spain's most recognizable public monuments, now crowned with the European Union flag visible in contemporary celebrations. The work exemplifies neoclassical public sculpture at monumental scale, blending mythological grandeur with refined technical craftsmanship. Photo by Jorge Fernández Salas on Unsplash
