Cloud Gate
2006
Cloud Gate is a monumental public sculpture of polished stainless steel that dominates Chicago's Millennium Park with its distinctive bean-like form and mirrored surface. Completed in 2006 by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor, the 66-foot-long structure reflects and distorts the city skyline and clouds above, creating a dynamic interaction between the artwork, environment, and viewers who gather beneath its 12-foot-high arch. Its seamlessly welded exterior eliminates visible seams, enhancing the sculpture's ethereal quality despite its massive 110-ton weight. The work exemplifies contemporary public art's embrace of monumental scale, reflective surfaces, and participatory engagement, inviting millions of visitors annually to experience the shifting perspectives and surreal landscape distortions it produces. Often affectionately called 'The Bean' by locals, Cloud Gate has become an iconic symbol of Chicago and a landmark of twenty-first-century sculptural innovation. Photo by Richard Tao on Unsplash
