Needlepoint Upholstered Early 20th c. Daybed

1943

This early twentieth century daybed features a wooden frame with turned oak legs and decorative feet, upholstered with hand stitched needlepoint depicting a reclining female figure rendered in warm ochres and flesh tones against a blue patterned ground. The figure, shown in classical repose with draped fabric, occupies the entire surface of the mattress, creating an illusionistic trompe l'oeil effect that conflates the human form with functional domestic furniture. Red cross hatching marks accent the composition, while decorative nail head tacks secure the textile to the frame, emphasizing the craftsmanship of both the needlework and carpentry. This work represents a surrealist and decorative arts intersection, transforming utilitarian furniture into a provocative meditation on the body, desire, and domestic space.

Medium
needlepoint upholstery, oak, tacks
