Yu-ichi Inoue (1916, 1985) was a pioneering Japanese calligrapher and avant-garde artist who radically reimagined the traditional practice of shodo, transforming it into a bold, expressionistic art form. Working with thick black ink on large-scale paper, he reduced characters to their most primal, visceral forms, creating works that bridged Eastern calligraphic tradition and Western Abstract Expressionism. His monumental single-character works, often depicting words such as 'love' or 'Buddha,' are celebrated for their raw spiritual intensity and are held in major collections worldwide.
