Silke Otto-Knapp

Silke Otto-Knapp (1970, 2022) was a German-born, London-based painter known for her ethereal, atmospheric works rendered in watercolor and gouache on canvas. Her practice drew on art history, performance, dance, and theatre, often depicting figures in motion, stage sets, and landscape-like environments with a distinctive luminous quality achieved through layering translucent washes. She was a significant figure in contemporary painting and also worked as a professor at UCLA's Department of Art.
