Regina José Galindo is a Guatemalan performance artist and poet whose visceral, politically charged work confronts issues of violence, gender oppression, racism, and human rights abuses, often using her own body as the primary medium. Born in 1974 in Guatemala City, she gained international recognition for works that reference the brutal history of her country, including the genocide of Indigenous peoples and femicide. Her unflinching performances have earned her prestigious recognition including the Golden Lion for Best Young Artist at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.
