Jusepe de Ribera (1591, 1652), known as 'lo Spagnoletto' (the Little Spaniard), was a Spanish Baroque painter and printmaker who spent most of his career in Naples, then under Spanish rule. A leading follower of Caravaggio, he became celebrated for his intensely dramatic tenebrism, visceral depictions of martyrdom, and unflinching portrayals of aged, weathered figures. His works were highly sought after by Spanish viceroys and royal collectors, earning him international renown during his lifetime.
