José Gurvich (1927, 1974) was a Lithuanian-born Uruguayan painter and ceramicist who became one of the most significant figures in Latin American modernism. A devoted disciple of Joaquín Torres-García, Gurvich worked within the Constructivist framework of the Taller Torres-García while infusing his art with personal symbolism, Jewish mysticism, and vibrant color. His richly layered compositions blending figures, symbols, and abstract structures earned him international recognition, and his work is celebrated in major collections across Uruguay, Israel, and beyond.
