Joan Fontcuberta is a Spanish artist, photographer, and critic born in 1955 in Barcelona, whose work critically interrogates the nature of photography, truth, and representation. He is best known for fabricating elaborate fictional scientific and documentary narratives, such as his 'Fauna' and 'Sputnik' series, that challenge the viewer's trust in photographic evidence and institutional authority. Fontcuberta is widely regarded as one of the most important conceptual photographers working today and has received numerous accolades including the Hasselblad Award in 2013.
