Jacques Villeglé

Jacques Villeglé (1926, 2022) was a French artist and founding member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement, best known for his 'lacerated posters' or 'décollages,' created by tearing and collecting layers of street posters to reveal stratified compositions beneath. Working in the urban environment as his studio, Villeglé elevated anonymous acts of vandalism and public imagery into fine art, transforming the streets of Paris into an ongoing social and political archive. His work is celebrated for its commentary on consumer culture, mass media, and collective authorship.
