Giovanni Francesco Caroto (c. 1480, 1555) was a Veronese painter who trained under Liberale da Verona and was deeply influenced by Andrea Mantegna, whose style he encountered during a period in Mantua. He was a prolific artist whose works include altarpieces, portraits, and devotional paintings, blending Northern Italian Renaissance traditions with elements absorbed from his Mantuan sojourn. He is perhaps best known for his charming portrait of a boy holding a child's drawing, considered one of the earliest depictions of children's art in Western painting.
