Cícero Dias (1907, 2003) was a Brazilian modernist painter born in Pernambuco, who became one of the most significant figures in Brazilian and Latin American modern art. Known for his dreamlike, sensual compositions that blended surrealism with the vivid colors and imagery of his native Northeast Brazil, he was deeply influenced by both European modernism and his tropical roots. After moving to Paris in the 1930s, where he befriended Picasso and other avant-garde figures, he transitioned from figurative surrealism to pure abstraction, becoming one of Brazil's pioneering abstract painters.
