Arthur William Devis was an English painter renowned for his history paintings and portraits, exhibiting sixty-five works at the Royal Academy between 1779 and 1821. He is best known for his dramatic depiction of the Death of Nelson and a posthumous portrait of the celebrated naval hero. His work reflects the grand tradition of British historical and portrait painting of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
