Berni was a painter and printmaker who combined social realism with surrealism to depict the lives of Argentina's poor. His series featuring the characters Juanito Laguna and Ramona Montiel, created with found materials and collage, addressed poverty and marginalization. He won the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1962 and is held in major Latin American collections.
