Afro Basaldella (1912, 1976), known simply as Afro, was an Italian painter celebrated for his lyrical approach to Abstract Expressionism and his ability to blend European painterly traditions with American abstraction. He was a leading figure of the Italian postwar avant-garde, maintaining strong connections to the New York art scene and exhibiting alongside artists such as Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. His luminous, color-saturated canvases are characterized by organic forms, gestural brushwork, and a poetic sense of light that earned him international acclaim.
