Whitfield Lovell

Lovell creates drawings and installations memorializing anonymous African Americans from the post-Civil War era through the Jim Crow period. His charcoal portraits on found wood, often paired with found objects, create intimate, shrine-like environments. His work is collected by the Smithsonian, the Whitney, and the Metropolitan Museum.
