Fritz Glarner (1899, 1972) was a Swiss-American abstract painter best known for his development of 'Relational Painting,' a rigorous geometric abstraction derived from the De Stijl principles of Piet Mondrian. Working primarily with tondo (circular) formats and rectangular compositions, Glarner refined a vocabulary of tilted rectangles and primary colors combined with grays and whites to create dynamic, harmonious spatial relationships. He was a significant figure in the transmission of European constructivist ideals to the American art scene, particularly through his long association with New York's avant-garde community.
