Two arched wings from a triptych, George Klontzas, Crete, late 16th century

These painted wooden wings are the surviving outer panels of a Cretan triptych created by George Klontzas, a prominent 16th century icon painter working in the Venetian dominated island. The arched tops and carefully articulated religious imagery reflect the Byzantine tradition as filtered through the Cretan School, which synthesized Eastern Orthodox iconography with Western Renaissance influences. As functional hinged doors to a central panel, these wings would have protected the interior sacred scenes when the altarpiece was closed.
