King Kamehameha I Statue
1883
This monumental bronze statue depicts King Kamehameha I in regal posture, cast by sculptor Thomas Ridgeway Gould in 1883. The figure stands draped in traditional Hawaiian garments and lei, elevated on a white stone pedestal before the stately Aliʻiōlani Hale, with tall coconut palms framing the composition. As one of Hawaii's most iconic public monuments, the work commemorates the king who unified the Hawaiian islands in the late eighteenth century. The gilded bronze catches light brilliantly against Honolulu's tropical sky, while its commanding scale and formal setting establish it as a centerpiece of civic identity and historical memory in the Hawaiian capital.
