La Divine Comédie (The Divine Comedy) (M&L 1039-1138; Field p.190)
Salvador Dalí's illustrated edition of Dante's Divine Comedy comprises 65 colorful woodcuts distributed across six volumes, published in 1960 by the Florence based Arti e Scienze and limited to an edition of 2900 copies. Each volume is handsomely bound in cream boards and includes the complete text alongside Dalí's surrealist interpretations of Dante's medieval narrative. This incomplete set represents a significant undertaking in twentieth century printmaking, combining classical literature with modernist visual language through the medium of color woodcut.
