10 Columns
2024
Ten Columns is a large scale light installation composed of vertical and rectangular luminous forms that systematically shift through programmed color sequences. The work animates continuously, with hues and intensities changing over time to create a dynamic color choreography across the gallery space. Smith constructs the installation using LED technology integrated within architectural frameworks, creating moments of radiant luminosity against dark surroundings. The piece investigates how programmed light transforms perception of form, space, and time, inviting viewers to experience the subtle phenomenological effects of color transition and spatial illumination. Installed at Bridge Projects in Los Angeles, the work demonstrates Smith's ongoing engagement with light as both material and subject.

James Turrell
American · b. 1943

Turrell similarly uses light as a primary sculptural medium in site specific desert environments, creating immersive perceptual experiences that blur the boundaries between natural and artificial illumination.

Ólafur Elíasson
Danish Icelandic · b. 1967

Eliasson creates large scale installations using light, mirrors, and reflective surfaces to engage viewers with natural phenomena, sharing Smith's interest in transforming architectural and landscape environments through precisely orchestrated sensory interventions.
Doug Wheeler
American · b. 1939
Wheeler is a core figure in the Light and Space movement whose immersive environments using diffused light and minimalist forms closely parallel Smith's exploration of perception, luminosity, and spatial transformation.
