This Is the Place Monument
1947
This monumental bronze and granite composition commemorates a pivotal moment in American settlement history. Rising from a massive stone base, a soaring obelisk towers above smaller narrative reliefs depicting scenes of migration and arrival, while three bronze figures stand atop the peak in triumphant silhouette. Mahonri Young's 1947 sculpture masterfully combines figural realism in the base compositions with abstracted forms at the summit, creating a dramatic visual narrative that reads across multiple scales. The warm honey-colored granite and dark patinated bronze contrast richly against the landscape, while the work's monumental proportions and heroic rhetoric exemplify mid-twentieth-century public sculpture at its most ambitious and didactic.
