Ulysses S. Grant Memorial
1922
Henry Merwin Shrady's monumental bronze equestrian sculpture depicts General Ulysses S. Grant mounted on a rearing horse, captured in a dynamic moment of military command. Completed in 1922 and positioned prominently at Union Square on the west front of the U.S. Capitol, this life-size figure embodies the heroic tradition of American public sculpture and commemorates Grant's pivotal role as a Union general during the Civil War. The work's dramatic composition, with the horse's powerful musculature and the general's commanding posture, exemplifies the Beaux Arts sculptural tradition that dominated American monumental art in the early twentieth century. Cast in bronze and set upon a substantial pedestal, the sculpture dominates its architectural setting and remains one of Washington, D.C.'s most recognizable civic monuments.
