Double busts carved in a single block
1845
This marble sculpture presents two idealized portrait busts stacked vertically within a single block of pale cream stone. The lower bust depicts a figure with classically styled curled hair and refined facial features, while the upper bust shows a young child or cherub with short, delicately carved hair. The work demonstrates virtuosic marble carving technique, with the contrasting smooth planes of the faces set against the textured, wavy locks. The composition creates an intriguing visual relationship between the two profiles, unified through the shared stone matrix and neoclassical sensibility characteristic of mid nineteenth century Roman sculpture.
