Grünes Feld (Green Field)
1969
This work presents a sweeping agricultural landscape rendered in soft, muted tones that blur the distinction between observation and abstraction. The composition is divided horizontally into a dominant green field in the foreground and a hazy, atmospheric sky above, with a distant tree line rendered almost imperceptibly along the horizon. Richter's technique here exemplifies his photo painting practice, where he translates photographic source material into oil paint, deliberately softening and obscuring details to create a meditative quality. The subtle gradations of color and the overall softness of focus create a sense of atmospheric perspective while simultaneously emphasizing the materiality of paint itself. The work captures the quietude of the European countryside while questioning the relationship between photographic documentation and painterly interpretation.
