Some of them look like Pollocks, some look very realistic, others are painterly, some are dumb, some are elegant, some are beautiful.’ (Dan Colen, ‘My Paintings Look Like Shit’,
Dan Colen's large-scale canvas is smothered in thick, viscous accumulations of oil paint that uncannily mimic the organic splatter and drip of bird excrement. The work occupies an uneasy tension between the abject and the painterly, inviting comparisons to Abstract Expressionism while simultaneously undermining its heroic gestures with crude, humorous irreverence. Colen's deliberate provocation blurs the boundaries between accident and intention, beauty and disgust, challenging conventional hierarchies of taste and artistic value.
