Somnyama IV, Oslo
2015
Somnyama IV, Oslo (2015) is a commanding large-scale self-portrait in which Zanele Muholi confronts the viewer with unflinching directness, the image printed in UV-cured ink on aluminium to produce a surface of exceptional luminosity and depth. Measuring over 180 centimetres in height, the work belongs to Muholi's celebrated Somnyama Ngonyama series, a title translating roughly as "Hail the Dark Lioness" from isiZulu, a body of work in which the artist deliberately deepens the tones of their own skin to interrogate the photographic and colonial histories that have long distorted representations of Black bodies. The aluminium substrate intensifies this effect, giving the shadows a near-metallic weight while allowing highlights to radiate with almost sculptural presence. The photograph was made in Oslo in 2015, one of numerous international locations where Muholi staged these portraits using found or improvised materials as props and adornments, a practice that transforms everyday objects into markers of identity, resistance, and cultural memory. The result is an image that functions simultaneously as personal testimony and political statement, locating Black subjectivity at the centre of its own narrative rather than at the margins of someone else's. The monumental scale reinforces this insistence on visibility, refusing any possibility of the figure being overlooked or diminished. Offered through Southern Guild, one of the leading galleries dedicated to design and art from the African continent, this work represents a significant acquisition opportunity within a body of work now held in major museum collections worldwide. Muholi's practice has achieved sustained critical recognition across institutions including Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art, and large-format prints from the Somnyama Ngonyama series are among the most sought-after works in contemporary photography. The combination of scale, material specificity, and conceptual rigor makes Somnyama IV, Oslo an exceptional example of Muholi's sustained investigation into what it means to be seen.
