Brigham Young Monument
1897
This monumental bronze sculpture depicts Brigham Young, founder of Salt Lake City, standing atop a substantial granite pedestal in a commanding pose with one arm extended outward. Created by American sculptor Cyrus Dallin in 1897, the work exemplifies late nineteenth century public commemorative sculpture, combining idealized portraiture with allegorical figures. The composition features Young in period dress on the upper tier, while two reclining figures representing settlers or pioneers occupy the lower sections of the base, emphasizing themes of leadership and westward expansion. The patinated bronze contrasts dramatically with the light granite base, while surrounding landscaping and the urban plaza setting underscore its role as a civic landmark and gathering space.
