Platter with Trout #39
2015
A playful yet quietly contemplative work, Calvin Marcus layers liquid watercolour, water soluble wax, vinyl paint, oil crayon, and gesso onto printed cardboard to render a trout resting on a platter with loose, unassuming directness. The humble, everyday subject is treated with a deadpan sincerity characteristic of Marcus's practice, where domestic and mundane imagery is elevated through material experimentation and a deliberately unprecious approach to painting. The varied mediums create a richly textured surface that feels both spontaneous and considered, oscillating between the handmade and the vernacular.
