Quadriga (Brandenburg Gate)
1793
Crowning the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, this monumental copper quadriga depicts Victory (Nike) as a winged allegorical figure seated in a chariot drawn by four spirited horses. Cast in gleaming copper that has weathered to a distinctive pale green patina, the sculpture stands as a masterwork of Neoclassical public art, combining Johann Gottfried Schadow's meticulous anatomical rendering with symbolic grandeur. The chariot bears a cross adorned with the Prussian eagle, explicitly linking the goddess's triumph to state power and military achievement. Executed in 1793, the work exemplifies late eighteenth century celebrations of heroic virtue through classical mythology, functioning simultaneously as architectural ornament and propagandistic monument. The quadriga remains one of Europe's most recognizable sculptural landmarks, enduring as a symbol of Berlin itself through centuries of political transformation. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)
