Intaglio representing Mars and Venus
1620
This oval intaglio presents a meticulously carved figural scene on sardonyx, a banded hardstone that displays warm amber and cream tones. A robed female figure in red and blue drapery floats among clouds in the upper register, while below appears a cherub or putto rendered in relief. The artist has skillfully exploited the stone's natural stratification to create luminous effects, with the design cut into the darker layer to reveal lighter stone beneath. Mounted in a modernist bronze stand, the work exemplifies early seventeenth century Paris hardstone carving, where classical subjects were rendered with miniaturist precision and technical virtuosity.
