Graffiti et blanc
1988
A dynamic interplay of raw materiality and gestural mark-making defines this work, where layers of oil paint are scraped and scratched through the grattage technique to reveal underlying strata of pigment and texture. Tàpies incorporates graphite scrawls that evoke the spontaneous, anonymous quality of street graffiti, blurring the boundary between fine art and urban expression. The stark contrast of dark marks against white ground reinforces the artist's signature meditation on surface as a site of memory, erasure, and human presence.
