Library of Dust 1470
A haunting and otherworldly photograph by David Maisel, *Library of Dust 1470* depicts one of the deteriorating copper canisters from a state psychiatric hospital, where the unclaimed cremated remains of former patients were stored for decades. The surface of the canister has transformed over time into an eruption of vivid mineral blooms — bursts of turquoise, rust, and gold — that simultaneously evoke beauty and tragedy. Printed as an archival pigment print and flush-mounted, the image blurs the boundary between documentation and abstraction, forcing viewers to confront themes of forgotten identity, institutional neglect, and the strange poetry of decay.
