Peter Coffin — Sculpture Silhouette Prop (R. Serra 'One ton prop' 1969)
Peter Coffin

Sculpture Silhouette Prop (R. Serra 'One ton prop' 1969)

2007

A deceptively flat recreation of Richard Serra's iconic lead prop sculpture, Coffin's work uses painted MDF panels mounted on steel stands to mimic the imposing three-dimensional form of the original through mere silhouette. A video projection animates the piece, casting the illusion of Serra's gravity-defying arrangement of leaning plates onto what is ultimately a two-dimensional surrogate. The work playfully interrogates ideas of representation, presence, and the mythology surrounding canonical Minimalist sculpture.
