Ettore Ximenes & Manfredo Manfredi — Monument to the Independence of Brazil

Monument to the Independence of Brazil

1922

This monumental bronze and granite sculpture commemorates Brazil's independence, standing as one of South America's most iconic public artworks. Designed by Italian sculptors Ettore Ximenes and Manfredo Manfredi, the composition features a towering central figure holding a torch aloft, surrounded by multiple bronze figures arranged in dynamic narrative scenes across the massive pedestal base. The white granite base is carved with elaborate allegorical relief panels depicting historical figures and moments of national significance, while smaller bronze sculptural groups flank either side of the monument. Rising prominently above Independence Park in São Paulo's Ipiranga neighborhood, its grand neoclassical vocabulary and heroic scale embody early twentieth century monumental sculpture at its most ambitious. The work represents a synthesis of European sculptural tradition applied to Brazilian national identity and historical commemoration. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)
