Boy on Flying Machine
A life-sized mannequin dressed in vibrantly patterned Dutch wax printed cotton is mounted upon a fantastical, handcrafted flying contraption constructed from steel, rubber, and aluminum. The work evokes the spirit of early aviation pioneers while simultaneously interrogating colonial history through the fabric's complex origins — a textile marketed as authentically African yet manufactured in Europe for trade. Shonibare uses this layered symbolism to explore themes of ambition, cultural identity, and the contested narratives of progress and exploration.
