Bismarck Archipelago Shark
A striking assemblage of industrial and organic materials, this work by Ashley Bickerton combines rubber, leather, rope, and coconuts with resin, PVC, acrylic, liquid, and metal to evoke the collision between consumer culture and the natural world. Drawing on Bickerton's long residence in Bali and his fascination with the exotic and the artificial, the piece channels the raw, totemic energy of the Bismarck Archipelago through a layered, tactile construction. The shark — a primal symbol of oceanic power — is rendered through an accumulation of found and manufactured materials, blurring the boundary between the wild and the synthetic.
