Juno and the Paycock (not in Cristea)
Gillian Ayres' 1992 work "Juno and the Paycock" is a large format etching with carborundum printed in colours and extensively hand coloured with acrylic, demonstrating the artist's characteristic vibrant and gestural approach to printmaking. This printer's proof, aside from an edition of 25, was meticulously printed and hand coloured by Jack Shirreff at 107 Workshop in Wiltshire on Arches paper, resulting in a monumental square composition measuring over one metre on each side. The work exemplifies Ayres' integration of traditional printmaking techniques with contemporary colour application, creating a dynamic interplay between the structured process of etching and the spontaneity of hand application.
