Statue of Saigō Takamori
1898
This monumental bronze sculpture depicts Saigō Takamori, a towering figure in Japanese history, rendered in classical realist style by sculptor Takamura Kōun. Cast in 1898, the work presents the samurai statesman in traditional dress, holding a sword and accompanied by a small dog, capturing both his martial bearing and human dignity. Patinated to a distinctive greenish tone, the figure stands approximately three meters tall atop a substantial stone pedestal inscribed with Japanese characters that document his legacy. The sculpture has become an iconic landmark of Ueno Park and represents a pivotal moment in Meiji era art when Japan reconciled its feudal past with modernization, commemorating a complex historical figure through dignified, accessible public sculpture.
