Columbus Monument
1888
This imposing cast iron column, crowned with a bronze statue, rises prominently from an ornate stone pedestal at Barcelona's Portal de la Pau. Designed by Gaietà Buïgas i Monravà and Rafael Atché, the monument exemplifies the grand commemorative sculptures of the late nineteenth century, combining structural engineering with elaborate decorative detail. The fluted shaft is adorned with allegorical relief work and crowned figures, while the base features winged sphinxes and classical ornamentation. Standing at the threshold between the Rambla and the waterfront, this landmark became an iconic symbol of Barcelona's maritime history and aspirations. The work's theatrical scale and ornamental richness reflect the optimistic spirit of the industrial age. Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA)
